SPORTS: THE MINDSET OF A CHAMPION
QUOTE:
"Michael Jordan wasn't a natural, either. He was the hardest working athlete, perhaps in the history of sports"
COMMENT/CONNECTION:
This chapter was very interesting to me. It made me think a lot about attitude and how much it attributes to your success when you are in a situation. We recently read the article about how mindset effects how you do in math. Some think you either get it or you don't. Whether its math or sports, mindset is molded by the person. Often when we see people that are naturally good at things, they aren't remembered. They're good, that's all they will be. They reach the border of success in the industry they're in, but can they surpass that? People who continue to practice at anything, like basketball, get better. As they continue to practice, characteristics build inside of them. They build the determination, the endurance, the passion within them to keep going. Michael Jordan was one of the best basketball players of all time. He wasn't a natural, in fact he got kicked off his basketball team. It was the practice that got him to where he is now. There is the 10,000 hour theory, saying that in order to be successful in any field, you need to practice at least 10,000 hours. We remember people like Michael Jordan because of his passion behind the motivation to succeed. People saw him grow and improve and surpass the own limits he had.
This connects to me because I do play sports. I play softball. When I started, I really did stink. I was definitely no all star. I did keep going, and pushing myself though. I remember when I couldn't even catch a ball and the next second I knew I was catcher for my team. I went from trying to catch a 5 mph ball to catching a 65 mph ball and throwing it directly to second base. The determination made me get better. The set mindset can be on anything, just not on sports. It can be in school, work, anything that involves progress.
QUESTIONS:
- How can we get everyone to have a positive mentality?
- How do mentalities become negative?
